How to Build a Tacoma DADU: PART 1

If you’ve found this blog post, you may already be interested in building an ADU (Additional Dwelling Unit) on your property. You may even be searching for a property with ADUs in mind. If you’re new here, and have stumbled upon this blog, let me catch you up real quick.

The Pierce County Housing market has been booming the past few years. Specifically, Tacoma, University Place, Fircrest, Lakewood, etc. For the average joe, buying a single family lot and building an ADU (Additional Dwelling Unit) or a DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a wonderful alternative to traditional multifamily properties that many buyers are looking into. In lay terms, an ADU is basically a mother-in-law unit either attached (ADU) or detached (DADU) from your primary dwelling. The first step in the process is identifying a property that would be good for an ADU, in one of two ways.

  1. The property has a structure that you can potentially convert OR

  2. The lot has enough space to build an ADU/DADU.

I have personal experience in buying and building Tacoma DADU’s.

As your realtor, I love to share my experience and help to search and identify properties in the area that work for your wants and needs, as well as the requirements of Tacoma’s ADU rules. I will keep you updated with the latest Tacoma properties that hit the market by sending you emails of the day’s freshly listed properties. I always recommend getting into view the property as quickly as possible, as being prompt and early gives us an edge on our property hunt. This gives us time to prepare our strategy and work quickly to land a Tacoma DADU property! Once we’ve found you a property and won the offer, you can begin the process of finding a contractor and planning out your build. I am happy to give all of my clients a personal introduction to some of Tacoma’s best DADU contractors.

Tacoma has continued to update and change their laws to simplify ADU/DADU construction in the city, but there is still criteria that your future DADU needs to fit into. Read PART TWO to find out more about building your DADU!
