If you identify as male, you might want to skip to number 2 because Vie Athletics is an all-women's gym, with multiple locations in the Tacoma area. This gym has 7 locations, one of which is located in Tacoma’s North End, as well as a University Place location right on the edge of Tacoma. It offers 50 minute, coach led strength-based workouts with cardio mixed in. With classes starting at 5am, and ending at 7pm, it’s easy to find a time that you can squeeze in, just make sure you sign up in advance! Vie prides itself on being community based gym, and never does the same workout twice. This gym is popular and you will find an array of options to make the workouts either more challenging, or modifiable. Monthly packages range from $60-$160 depending on how often you want to come. The music will be cranked up loud, and you will learn how to lift dumbbells, kettlebells and barbells!
This gym is another group atmosphere gym with structured workouts. They base their workouts on three different stations- one with rowing machines, one with treadmills, and one with weights. Orangetheory uses technology to track and display real-time data during workouts, including heart rate, calorie burn, and exercise intensity. This technology can help individuals stay motivated and challenge themselves. Pricing ranges from $80-$180 based off your package choice, and they offer classes from 5am-7pm.
University Place Crossfit (UPCF):
UPCF is a Crossfit affiliate gym located right on the edge of Tacoma in Fircrest. This gym offers “Open Gym” time blocks, as well as structured classes with coaching, with price ranges starting at $99 going up to $180, depending on which option you’re planning on using. Crossfit classes generally start with a warmup, and then go into a strength training portion where you will most often be working with a barbell and doing some sort of olympic weightlifting. After that you will do a WOD, or “workout of the day” where that strength piece is incorporated into a structured workout. You can expect to have partner workouts sometimes, and a community-focused energy!
Ascent is a great gym, especially if you’re new to strength building! They offer personal training, open gym and group fitness classes. Their group classes are inclusive and beginner friendly with options to add challenges or modify. Their mission at Ascent is to expand access and inclusion in joyful movement. One aspect we love is that they also offer an “Approach Series” where they will introduce you to strength training so you can feel comfortable afterwards in joining the group classes. They have a team of coaches that lead group classes to help folks with the strength, skills and appropriate challenge needed to experience fun while moving. They offer a handful of classes each week, starting at 5am going until 6:15pm depending on the day, with pricing starting at $42 and going up to $175.
YMCA:
The Y is a longtime local favorite, and is known for being family friendly, with a daycare, as well as youth class programs! They have machines, free-weights, and classes such as TRX, pilates, and stroller-strength. One thing we love about the Y is that they have everything that you could possibly want in a facility, including a pool, hot tub and sauna. They are open from 5am-10pm depending on the day of the week and a membership is around $60 with a signup fee to begin. They also offer a sliding scale, where you can apply for a discount based off your income. The Y is popular, so time your workouts accordingly so that you don’t have to wait for a machine during peak hours!

Their hours are ample, opening at 4am and closing at 10pm depending on the day of the week. They have an array of weight-lifting machines, cardio machines, but do not have squat racks, you’ll be squatting on a smith-machine.
