Can I Build an ADU in Tacoma?
The short answer is yes.
Now, to be fair there are many exceptions and requirements but in general most single family homes are allowed to build an ADU or DADU in Tacoma thanks to the updated rules passed back in 2019. Additionally, it is possible to convert existing structures like garages, basements, attics into an ADU or DADU as well, which can sometimes offer a substantial savings compared to building a brand new ADU or DADU in Tacoma.
There has also been some new changes that were just passed as part of the “Home in Tacoma” zoning effort at the end of 2021 to allow for ADU and DADU projects to be built on even more property types, but the details aren’t clear yet as the city is still finalizing the final details of those changes. I will be posting more about this as new information is released, so stay tuned! Lastly, please feel free call or text me with any questions if you’re looking to find a home to buy in Tacoma with an ADU or DADU or the potential to build an ADU or DADU.
