What to do when buying a fixer-upper in Tacoma WA

In this blog post we will detail what to do when purchasing a fixer-upper that you plan to remodel. Scroll down for Before & After photos!

Most people want to buy a home that they can picture themselves living in- and that can be hard to do with a fixer-upper! If you are interested in taking on a project like this, here is what we recommend:

Talk to a realtor who knows their stuff.

As someone who has remodeled multiple homes, built houses and ADUs, I have expansive knowledge about what to expect with the remodeling process and can help you pick out a house that will work with your timeline, finances and expectations.

Find your contractor beforehand.

Reach out to a handful of local contractors. Get an idea of what price range certain remodels can cost and figure out who you like! You should be able to get a rough idea of what a bathroom or kitchen could potentially cost. Keep in mind, upgrades and personal preference can effect these numbers drastically.   If you’re anything like me, you probably think that you don’t have expensive taste (but you do!)- prepare your budget for those expensive kitchen counters!

Allow yourself to have vision.

Try to see past the ugly carpets, bright purple walls and piles of messy personal belongings as you walkthrough houses. This is the part that many people struggle with the most, and why turnkey, staged houses cost a lot more! Being able to appreciate the bones of a house will take your money much much farther!

Check out these Before & After photos of a property some of my past clients purchased and then remodeled. They did portions of the work themselves, and then hired different contractors for assistance with larger aspects. Reach out today with Questions!
